Who is actually responsible for fire safety in your business?
- An employer
- A director
- The owner
- The landlord
- An occupier
- Someone else , eg a facilities manager, a building manager or managing agent
Whoever it is, you are supposed to know who that ‘responsible person’ is.
If there’s more than one responsible person, then you have to work together to meet your responsibilities.
The ‘responsible’ person must:
- Carry out a fire risk assessment [over five people] of the premises and review it regularly
- Tell staff or their representatives about the risks you’ve identified
- Put in place, and maintain, appropriate fire safety measures
- Plan for an emergency
- Provide staff information, fire safety instruction and training
- Ensure regular maintenance carried out on extinguishing appliances
MGP can assist our larger commercial clients with their fire risk assessments responsibilities through our in-house engineer Dermot Green who is a semi retired chief fire officer. Dermot can be hired on a case by case basis for a fee for non-MGP insurance clients.
